marriott wardman park, washington d.c.

on december 30, 2006, while i was staying at an enormous cookie-cutter marriott hotel in washington d.c. there was a fire in the middle of the night. fortunately, no one was hurt and, as far as i know, the hotel didn't suffer any major damage. luckily for me, we were evacuated in a part of the hotel that, i suppose, one doesn't typically visit. there was a women's restroom there, and it had BUILT-IN ASHTRAYS!

the following morning, when we left, i discovered that there was a built-in ashtray in the hotel garage. unlike those in the women's bathroom, this had been recently used.

for some reason, between taking this first picture and the following two, i felt a need to remove a folded piece of black tape. i'm pointing this out because it seems interesting to me. ashtrays are supposed to be dirty, no? yet, the tape seemed too dirty to me, somehow.

The meaning of "built-in"

"Built-in" is to be taken here to mean 'part of or permanently affixed to something really big,' like a wall or a car. It opposes "free-standing."

If you have pictures of built-in ashtrays, please send them to me at jenniejules@gmail.com. I will post them. Thank you.
